The storage spaces in our homes can sometimes be treated like dumping grounds. Boxes, bins, bags, baskets, stuff on shelves and in piles. It can be difficult to find anything when you need it.
If you’re planning to use a storage facility, you’ll want to be smart about how you pack and organize your self storage unit. Whether you store short term or long term, you may need to access your things. Properly packing your storage unit can save you time and money and will help keep your unit organized.
If you want your stored items to be easily accessible, here are 5 tips to help you stay organized:
Use The Right Storage Containers
Create An Inventory List For Your Stored Belongings
Label Your Boxes
Pack Your Storage Unit for Easy Access
Use Vertical Space
Cardboard boxes are a great storage choice because they are easy to stack. However, plastic bins are more durable.
When choosing boxes or bins, try to use only one or two different sizes. This will make stacking easier and will maximize the space in your storage unit. Medium and small boxes should fit most household belongings and are easier to move around than large boxes.
As you start packing your belongings, it’s a good idea to make a list of what you put in each box or bin. Record the contents of each box beside each box number, either on a piece of paper, or typed in a document. It takes time, but if you do this, you’ll know exactly where to find what you need, when you need it.
An inventory list for your storage unit is an exceedingly important tool when renting a self storage unit.
Your box labels can be as simple or as detailed as you like. If you’ve created an inventory list, then you can simply label each box with the matching list number. However, it will be helpful for you to label your boxes and bins with more detail than a number.
For example, if you’re storing a lot of books, you could use descriptive labels on your boxes like “text and reference books,” or “children’s books”. Kitchen boxes also do well with more descriptive labelling, such as “casseroles and cake pans” and “glasses: FRAGILE”.
Don’t forget to mark both the top and at least one side of each box or bin.
When organizing and packing your storage unit, put large items like furniture, exercise machines, appliances, etc., in the back of your storage unit. Couches can be placed upright on their sides to take advantage of vertical space. Chances are, for however long you rent your storage unit, you won’t need frequent access to any furniture you might be storing.
Place items and boxes you will want frequent access to closer to the front of your storage unit.
Boxes and bins are great for stacking, but stacked boxes can make access difficult. A better option is to put up free-standing shelving units inside your storage unit. This may seem like you aren’t really maximizing the space you have available, but it has advantages. Imagine waking up to a fresh blanket of snow and your winter coats and boots are in storage.
Imagine arriving at your storage unit and realizing you put the bin of winter outerwear on the bottom of a six-bin stack. It would be frustrating and time consuming to shuffle heavy bins around and restack them after you finally get at what you need. If you use shelves, it’s as simple as pulling one single bin or box down and replacing it when you’re done.
Renting storage gives you a place to store all your personal and household items and is a great place for seasonal items, such as holiday decorations.
