How To Combine Two Households

Two small houses merged into one larger house

Merging two households, while exciting, can take a lot of time and planning.  There needs to be some decluttering, giving up of things, addressing duplicate items and treasured family heirlooms.  This process can be stressful and produce conflicts.

COMMUNICATION IS IMPORTANT

Adapting your lifestyle to fit someone else's is a learning process that requires an open mind and a lot of compromise.  Discuss your expectations before you begin and make plans together.  You will need to decide together if you will move into one of your existing homes or move into a new place with a fresh start.

PURGE - RENTING A STORAGE UNIT IN EDMONTON CAN HELP

You should each go through your belongings separately and sort everything into piles.  Sort into 4 piles: keep, give away, sell or not sure.  Once that’s done, discuss your inventories with your partner and try to respect their wishes.

If you have items that you are not ready to part with yet or are not sure if they will fit into the new space, consider renting a self storage unit.  A self storage unit is a great short term or long term storage solution.

DUPLICATE ITEMS MUST GO

When merging two households you will probably find that you have a lot of duplicate items.  You will need to decided which of the duplicate items to keep and which to get rid of.  When deciding which items to keep, look for items that are in the best condition and highest quality.

If you can't seem to agree on which items to keep, get rid of them and get new ones.  This will hopefully help reduce arguments and problems.

CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES

Closet space may be limited once you have two wardrobes occupying the same space. This is the perfect time for both of you to go through your clothing and discard or donate any items you no longer wear or that you don’t need.

You can also move bulky, heavy items like shoes and coats to a secondary closet outside the bedroom.  If you don't have an obvious place for extra clothing storage, vacuum compaction bags are great for storing excess clothing, blankets, etc.

MEASURE AND DO A FLOOR PLAN

Measure the rooms in your new space so you can figure out what will fit where.  Include doors and windows so you know where furniture can be positioned.  Take pictures as well, so you'll remember the little details that could help you decide where to put things.

DECORATING STYLES

Decide on a new decorating scheme that works for both of you.  Each person should pick their favorite furniture and try to incorporate this into the new space.  You might consider buying a few new pieces of furniture to tie together your shared decor.

HOUSEHOLD CHORES

Most couples don’t think to discuss who will handle the household chores before moving in together. This is an important discussion that may reduce arguments in the long run.

HAVE AN OPEN MIND

The new household isn't going to be like your old one, and you shouldn't expect it or want it to be.  Strive for a new and improved merged household, rather than trying to replicate the old house.  You're merging your tastes with your partners to create something new and fresh.

With careful planning you can create a new space that you both enjoy and are comfortable in.  After the merge, look for something you can buy for your home that is yours together as a new household.
