How To Store Furniture In Self Storage

Two Men Wrapping and Moving Furniture

Protecting your furniture in self storage is easy if you take the time to store it correctly. A Climate controlled storage unit will ensure that your valuable furniture will be protected from moisture and changing temperatures. The decision to use an unheated storage unit may be costly and lead to your items being damaged.

We have compiled a best practices list on how to store your furniture in self-storage. Following these simple suggestions will help maintain your furniture for years to come.

1. Clean your furniture thoroughly
2. Disassemble furniture
3. Electronic and television storage tips
4. Protect your furniture
5. Secure delicate glass items
6. Be mindful of space
7. Don't leave food behind

Clean Your Furniture Thoroughly

Protect your stored items by never placing dirty belongings in your storage unit rental. Wash wood and plastic furniture with a mild soap and water mixture and clean fabric with an upholstery cleaner.  Make sure your furniture is completely dry before storing.

Protect wood furniture with a wood cleaner like Murphy's oil soap to preserve the finish. Make sure that everything is dry before storing. Polish any items that are metal to remove and prevent oxidation and tarnish.

Disassemble Furniture

Disassemble any furniture that you can, such as desks, tables, chairs and beds. This will maximize space in your storage unit and reduce the chance of breakage during your move. Place all the screws, bolts and other small items in a ziplock bag, label and attach it to the furniture. You may also wish to take a photo to help you reassemble.

Electronic and Television Storage Tips

When storing electronics and TV's, take extra steps to ensure they are protected. Store them in their original packaging, if possible. Wrap cords in bubble wrap and keep them along with the TV or electronics. Fill empty spaces with bubble wrap or packing peanuts to fill space.

Keep electronics off the floor to protect against moisture. We recommend placing a drop cloth or pallets on the floor of your storage unit.

Protect Your Furniture

Use old sheets, blankets and drop cloths to cover your furniture to protect them from dust and moisture.  Consider purchasing specialized boxes to store your paintings or mirrors. Mirror boxes come in a variety of sizes to help protect your belongings.

Secure Delicate Glass Items

Delicate items, such as glass tabletops and mirrors, require some additional handling. Use packing paper and secure with packing tape. You can also wrap in bubble wrap and secure with tape to help keep safe and secure.

Large picture boxes are ideal for storing mirrors and pictures and can be bought at most storage facilities. Label your breakables "fragile" to bring more attention to them.

Be Mindful Of Space

Packing your storage unit too full may cause troubles down the road. You will want to have enough space between your items for easy access and organization. Organize & pack your storage unit to maximize space and to avoid frustration.

Create an inventory of your storage unit contents as this will help you find items quickly when needed. Place your large furniture pieces at the back of the unit, followed by boxes and then your small items. Aisles make it convenient to access all sides of your storage space.

Don't Leave Food Behind

Any food left in your furniture or drawers will attract unwanted pests such as ants, termites, mice or rats.

Vacuum out all the cracks and crevices before storing your furniture. When packing for storage, a good rule is to not reuse boxes that were previously used for packing food items.
