Moving boxes come in various sizes and have recommended weights for each size for ease of carrying. The recommended maximum weight for any box is between 40 and 50 lbs. If you are having professional movers, and you are doing your own packing, they expect boxes to weigh 50 lbs or less. Some standard sizes are:
Small Storage Box - 1.5 cubic feet - 16.5" x 13" x 13" - This smaller cardboard box is ideal for all heavy items
Medium Storage Box - 2 cubic feet - 18" x 16" x 13" - An all purpose box that is perfect for general household items.
Large Storage Boxes - 4 cubic feet - 18" x 18" x 21" - This is a larger box that is perfect for lighter items such as bedding and towels.
Remember, you need to be able to lift the box once it holds your stuff. Limit the weight of the contents to what you can comfortably lift. Here are some tips on how to properly pack a cardboard box.
Using wardrobe boxes to pack clothing that can be hung on hangers reduces the hassle of unpacking and keeps your clothing crease free. Moving your clothing directly from the wardrobe box to your new closet takes less time and frustration than removing your clothing from a regular box or bag as your clothes are still on hangers. Wardrobe boxes are also great for storing seasonal or extra clothing or for storing your clothes in self storage unit.
The wardrobe boxes come in a standard (23" x 21" x 48") and portable size (43" x 24" x 24").
These are perfect for storing and moving framed items such as mirrors, painting and artwork that don't need the extra width of a regular moving box. They also are pre-printed with the "Fragile Handle with Care" warning that is particularly useful when you are not the one physically moving your stuff.
