Metal box containing RV battery

In order to extend the life of your RV battery and get the most out of your investment it is important to store your RV battery properly under the right conditions.  Extend the life of your RV batteries with these helpful tips.

All your RV appliances, lights, heat and some components of your water system need a source of electricity to function.  For them to work properly, your RV battery needs to be fully charged and operating at peak efficiency.  Keeping your battery well maintained while in use and storing it in the correct environment, when not in use, will extend your battery's life and usefulness.

Have your systems checked by a professional on a regular basis with an assessment of the remaining life in your battery.  Then you can plan ahead for a replacement without the concern of losing your power source in the middle of your trip.

In today's current environment, when you decide to get out of the city to relax, you may find that it's not as easy as it used to be to find a place to park that provides electricity for your RV.  This makes it even more important to ensure that your RV battery is reliable.  As a backup, investing in a gas generator may also be an option to consider.  Being prepared will make your outing more relaxing and enjoyable.

With some basic care and maintenance, you can extend the life of your RV batteries and get the most out of your investment.

BATTERY STORAGE & CARE TIPS:

  1. Before leaving on a trip, check your battery fluid and charge levels.   For an extended trip, make sure your RV battery is fully charged and not bleeding charge through faulty connections.   Check your travel plan to locate stations where you have the ability to recharge your battery if needed.

  2. When it's not in use and you are parking your RV for an extended period of time, remove the battery from your RV.

  3. Once removed, clean your battery terminals using a solution of baking soda and water to neutralize any corrosion on the battery terminals.  Rinse the area with clean clear water and dry with a clean cloth.

  4. If the plates of the battery are exposed, add distilled water to cover and then charge the battery fully.

  5. Check the water levels and fill to the recommended level.  Distilled water is the best to use as regular tap water can cause calcium sulfation.  NOTE:  Batteries should have water added only after charging unless the plates are exposed prior to charging.

  6. Store the battery in a warm, indoor location, preferably at room temperature.  Never place the battery directly on the concrete floor, use cardboard, wood or a mat to rest the battery on to prevent cold or moisture leeching up from the concrete.
