Self Storage Tips For Better Organization

A storage unit is a great way to free up some space in your home or office. Creating extra space in your home or office by using a self storage unit can relieve stress and the headache of having a disorganized space. However, having a disorganized storage unit can quickly make the stress and headaches return.

Whether you're storing inventory for your business, storing your belongings during a move or storing excess items to declutter your home, having a clean and organized storage unit is essential. Taking the time to organize your unit properly can save you a lot of time in the future and will give you peace of mind, knowing where everything is.

TAKE APART LARGE FURNITURE

By taking apart any large furniture, such as bed frames and tables, you can take advantage of more of the space in your storage unit.

Store as much as you can upright to open up floor space for other items. This might sound like a lot of work, but it will keep your unit more organized and save you money by not having to get as big of a unit.

STACK PROPERLY

When it comes to putting your items into your storage unit, stacking everything properly will not only optimize the space in your unit, but it will make it much easier to find things in your unit down the road.

When you start putting items inside your storage unit, put the large and heavy items in first.  Put them towards the back and sides of the unit.  Each stack of boxes should have the heaviest and largest boxes on the bottom and get smaller as you go up.  This will create a stable base for all of the stacks and greatly minimize the chance of things being damaged or falling over.

STORE FREQUENTLY ACCESSED ITEMS AT THE FRONT OF YOUR STORAGE UNIT

There are going to be some items you plan on accessing more frequently.  Take the time to figure out what these items are going to be and place them in an easy to access spot close to the front. Future visits will be quick and easy.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF VERTICAL STORAGE SPACE

Most storage units go up quite high inside. Take advantage of this space by stacking boxes all the way to the ceiling. Using shelving units in your storage unit is a great idea for stacking hard to stack items or things that you will need access to regularly.

CREATE AN AISLE DOWN YOUR STORAGE UNIT

When packing your storage unit, you may feel inclined to pack everything from floor to ceiling and wall to wall. This is okay if you are storing for a short period of time and will not need to access anything while in storage.

If you plan on having your unit on more of a long-term basis, pack your unit to have an aisle going down the middle. Access to your items will be much easier this way. Make sure to also leave a small gap between your items and the walls to allow for air circulation while your items are in storage.

CREATE A MAP AND INVENTORY

A map of where things are located in your unit will be a great help for you when it comes to finding what you need. It doesn’t need to be overly detailed or technical, it just needs to give you an idea of where everything is. On a piece of paper, label each section and write down the items located within them.  By keeping track of your stuff in your storage unit it will save you time in the future.

Put the map on the wall at the entrance of your unit. When you visit your storage unit in the future, your map will come in handy and make your visit a quick one.

LABEL ALL BOXES PUT INTO STORAGE

An organized storage unit is not complete without labeled boxes. Having everything labeled will help you tremendously when you go to your unit to find something. When you’re labeling your boxes, make sure to label all four sides so if things end up getting moved around, you will still know what is in the box.

Another option is to label each box with a number. You can then create a list with the number of each box and everything that is inside them. If you choose to label this way, keep the list at the front of the unit with your map.
