RV Storage can be hard to find as most homes do not have the extra space needed to store an RV. Also, most cities have rules about the length of time an RV can be parked in your driveway or in front of your house.
A self storage facility is a great place to store your RV during the summer and winter months. You can come and go as you please as your spot is for your exclusive use. Our Elite Self Storage Facilities offer both indoor and outdoor storage for your RV, trailer, vintage car or boat.
If you are storing your RV for the winter months you must take the time to prepare it to protect your investment. Here is a list of things that we recommend be done before storing your recreational vehicle:
Choose A Secure Location To Store Your RV
Drain The Water System and Winterize
Clean Inside and Out
Protect Your Tires When Storing Your RV
Remove or Disconnect the Batteries
Check Your RV Frequently While Being Stored
When looking for a place to store your RV, a gated and fenced storage facility is a great option. Find a storage facility near you for convenient access. Make sure the storage facility is well lit, is fully fenced and has security cameras.
Winterize your RV by draining all the water from the holding tank and lines. Run antifreeze through all the lines for added protection. Make sure to pour antifreeze down all the drains, as well as toilets.
Don't forget about the shower wand and outside shower, if you have one, as these sometimes get overlooked. Basically, check everything that has water running through it or standing in it to ensure they are empty and dry. Our winter temperatures can create havoc with ice formation and expansion.
Thoroughly clean the interior and exterior of the RV before covering or storing it. Wash it with a mild soap and clean water and dry thoroughly. Let air dry as well before sealing it up. Do a complete exterior wax coating to your RV before storing it to further protect it.
Empty & clean everything out of your fridge and freezer and put a box of baking soda in both to absorb any remaining odors. Prop the fridge and freezer doors open to prevent any mold or mildew from growing.
Make sure you remove all food from your cupboards as well. This includes anything that is not in a sealed metal or glass container.
Rodents can chew through plastic and cardboard. Review all the expiry dates on any canned goods you’re are leaving in the unit and dispose of any that will expire before your next trip. Remember canned goods can explode from being stored in freezing or high heat environments. Leaving food products or any types of grain in your stored RV can attract unwanted pests and rodents.
It is important to cover your tires to protect them from damage due to UV rays from the sun. We have a significant number of days in winter where the sun is shining even in freezing temperatures, so UV rays are definitely a consideration when you are parked outside. RV tire covers can be found at most RV dealerships.
Disconnect the batteries and store them in a cool, dry place. Freezing temperatures can damage or destroy your batteries.
If you are storing your RV outside, check your RV as often as you can to ensure there is no exterior or interior damage.
